Is there any reason not to learn "Heal" on everybody?
Hey, folks. I'm playing Disgaea 2 for the first time, and proceeding with the DLC characters for the most part. I'm still wrapping my head around the student/mentor system.

Is there any reason for me to not teach every character the heal spell? Excluding the one or two people who will be learning mage spells, that is.

You need high Res for a heal spell to be worthwhile.

Heal and Espoir are pretty handy to have on your characters.

Teaching elemental spells to your main healer is pretty handy as well.

While you can teach heal to everyone if you want, it's not really necessary. As you level the spell up, you'll get more aoe options for it, so you can group up everyone, heal them with your main healer/caster then cancel the movement of the others to save their action commands. It's even faster if the caster is using a staff, as leveling up the weapon mastery for it also contributes to the aoe for spells. On the other hand, having multiple people with healing might come in handy if there are a lot of geopanels with dmg% or reverse dmg (to kill enemies). Personally, though, I'd only recommend teaching the highest tier one (Omega Heal), and maybe Espoir, to your non-healers/casters later on.

Z3n mentioned teaching elemental spells to my main healer.

I taught Pram Heal, using a mentor. I then taught them Fire, Wind, and Ice. But learning these made her forget heal. I taught her Heal again, and she forgot Fire, Wind and Ice.

So as far as I can tell, one character can't learn both healer type spells and mage type spells. Is this normal?

Uh, no, that's not normal. The only way for a character to forget a skill (assuming you really did learn/got them to lv 1+) is to reincarnate the character in question so that the spell level drops below 1.

Are you sure you are leveling up your spells from 0 to 1? Or did you cast them only once and called it a day?

Levelling up from 0 to 1? So after a DLC character learns a spell from a student generic, they have to cast it in order to 'lock it in', or it gets forgotten?

Sorry for the stupid questions, this is a very convoluted and unexplained system for a new player.

Definitely not a stupid question, it is indeed not really explained. I was just assuming you read a guide about it or something.

When you put a character created with another one (who we'll call respectively the "master" and the "student") next to one another in battle, the master is able to cast all the magic spells of the student. If you cast the spells repeatedly till they reach lvl 1, they will be learned permanently by the master (well, you can lose a bunch of skill exp from reincarnating and can forget them if they go below lvl 1).

yup, keep casting the spell(s) you want with the master until it reaches lv 1. Then they don't need to stand next to their pupil(s). This is with any char (with a pupil) btw, not just the dlc chars.

edit: ah, I got ninja-ed

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I was able to get several spells on Pram and Marona (my dedicated casters), and I learned heal on everybody on my team. Since there doesn't seem to be a limit on the number of spells or skills I can have, there's no reason for them not to have the ability to pull out an emergency heal when needed.
