The colored panels are a staple mechanic in Disgaea, and exist in every game in the series... well idk about Disgaea 6 but I assume they are there too. They basically have 2 functions; apply effects (beneficial or harmful) to units that are standing on them, or add to your bonus score when they are destroyed. And for the record you could build towers of your units in Disgaea DS as well.
The PC port is interesting in that it contains content for all of the previous ports, which also kind of makes it it's own version.
There's also Disgaea 1 Complete on consoles, I don't know what order of port content it has in it.
