Starting a new game with Fighter, Red Skull, and Healer who have no master.
In the beginning of the game, your dad and mom give you three helper classes. They have no master, so they don't give any extra gain to Adell or whoever I put them underneath. Is there some benefit to having a character not in the master student chain? Are they stronger somehow? I'm going to be leveling these units up, but that seems like a waste to not level up a student in their place. Could someone help me out with this?

The master/student relationship basically does two things; increased chance of team attack with each other (I think it's just a flat +10%), and master can learn standard magics from the student. If you want either of those things, simply select whoever you want as the master to summon a new unit from the assembly.

'Extra gain' is just flavor. The stats are technically there, but the amount you gain is so little that there's no scenario where they are relevant.

Well the default units are 'average' so they have a bit better stats than anything you'll be making yourself at first.

In the end it doesn't matter too much either way, the stat differences you gain from the master pupil system isn't going to make or break anything.

If you really want your generic characters stand out, reincarnate them once they get to the appropriate level to unlock the more advanced version of their class. Example: Level 10 fighter turns into level 1 warrior, level 20 warrior turns into level 1 destroyer.

It'll take time to re-level your characters, but it's completely worth it. Twice true if you save up the mana required to get at the very least skilled for an extra 6 points to spend on the character's base stats. Trust me, it may not seem like much, but those few points of difference compound the more you level up. The terrible starter generics have the potential to be your best characters. Imagine reincarnating your magician into different elemental types. Not only will they get base stat improvements each time, they can retain their old set of spells. Meaning you can have a mage that can cast all element types.

In fact, I would also recommend reincarnating some of your main/unique characters too. Tink, Taro, Hanako and Yukimaru all have underwhelming stats. Even just one reincarnation with the right stat bonuses can significantly improve their combat performance. Tink would naturally be first priority since his movement makes him good for flanking and Item World travel.

Taro is already tankie with almost guaranteed counters on enemy attacks. One reincarnation to buff his ATK and HIT and then toss him in the middle of a bunch of melee enemies to watch the fun.
