D1 and D2 are my favorites for their stories with D1 being the best in this regard.
The qol and game mechanic advances in D2 are welcome though.

As you'd expect, each entry attempts to bring something new gameplay-wise (though the core mechanics remain the same for the most part). As such, playing the first one might be good to get familiarized and maybe avoid getting overwhelmed with them. Additionaly, if you play one of the later games and then decide to try one of the early entries, the simplicity and lack of some quality-of-life features might be a bit jarring (the remastered versions help attenuate some of that, but not completely).

Storywise, most of them are independent from each other, though they often have cameos and playable characters from other games made by NIS (not restricted to Disgaea games); the only direct sequel is Disgaea D2 (not to be confused with Disgaea 2), which follows the events of Disgaea 1, though one can argue about Disgaea Infinite (a visual novel game), which could be considered a prequel to Disgaea 2, but don't worry about it. The tone of the games is overall pretty chill and lighthearted, with a good dosage of humor, so it's not something to be taken too seriously anyway.

In terms of difficulty... it's a bit hard for me to say. Some maps in the first game can be pretty hard (especially if you don't grind). I didn't have much trouble with Disgaea 2, but my experience with the first game might've helped with that, so I'm not sure how much trouble someone new to the series would have.

Both are good games imho, so I think you'll be fine with either option. Maybe even try the other one (or even the newer entries) in the future if you end up liking it a lot.

It's unfortunate that you're having problems, and I can't help with that since I didn't have such issues. Try looking through the troubleshooting forums.

Why quote my answer for this, though? None of what I mentioned is related to the technical aspects of the port(s). I have heard some complaints about both versions of Disgaea 1 and 2 on Steam, but I thought it was fixed in one way or another.

2 meaning twice the grind after story mode due to the crammed content. NIS added plenty of stuff to do in the game.

In all Disgaea games, everytime there is content added that would make grinding easier there will always be a catch per iteration. You will find that out you played every disgaea game that existed. Well except for D6 and 7! I mean I have a lot on my disgaea backlog as is. X.x

For now I suggest you start with the first one. If you liked the first, you ll like the second.

Found a fix https://openal-soft.org/#download then open the openal-soft-1.23.1-bin folder go to bin then win32 rename the file you find in there to OpenAL32.dll cut paste into your games folder and it will all work. i already refunded the game i tried it on the demo again was pissed that i could not play it and bam now it works finally guess im buying it again

Well there are other ways to play both the 1st and the 2nd disgaea you know. I ll leave it at that. XD

The problem is that the content is not the same as disgaea 1 and 2 pc port.
