The qol and game mechanic advances in D2 are welcome though.
Storywise, most of them are independent from each other, though they often have cameos and playable characters from other games made by NIS (not restricted to Disgaea games); the only direct sequel is Disgaea D2 (not to be confused with Disgaea 2), which follows the events of Disgaea 1, though one can argue about Disgaea Infinite (a visual novel game), which could be considered a prequel to Disgaea 2, but don't worry about it. The tone of the games is overall pretty chill and lighthearted, with a good dosage of humor, so it's not something to be taken too seriously anyway.
In terms of difficulty... it's a bit hard for me to say. Some maps in the first game can be pretty hard (especially if you don't grind). I didn't have much trouble with Disgaea 2, but my experience with the first game might've helped with that, so I'm not sure how much trouble someone new to the series would have.
Both are good games imho, so I think you'll be fine with either option. Maybe even try the other one (or even the newer entries) in the future if you end up liking it a lot.
Not a very good first impression
Why quote my answer for this, though? None of what I mentioned is related to the technical aspects of the port(s). I have heard some complaints about both versions of Disgaea 1 and 2 on Steam, but I thought it was fixed in one way or another.
In all Disgaea games, everytime there is content added that would make grinding easier there will always be a catch per iteration. You will find that out you played every disgaea game that existed. Well except for D6 and 7! I mean I have a lot on my disgaea backlog as is. X.x
For now I suggest you start with the first one. If you liked the first, you ll like the second.
The problem is that the content is not the same as disgaea 1 and 2 pc port.
