D1 and D2 have elemental affinity rather than elemental resistance, which boosts both offense and defense with that element. Magic Knight can buff her elemental affinity (or use Firefighter/Aeronaut/Cryophile innocents) and debuff the elemental affinity of enemies. And her ability boosts the power of elemental attacks, even more so with lovers.
If you want to beat the 8 max-stat Pringer Xs, Magic Knight is up to the task.
One can make an argument about magichanging the Spirit to help an underleveled ally grind, but I believe it takes more time to level your Spirit (and/or farm lovers and a magichange scroll) to get decent stats than to just acquire and lv some decent equips for the weak char (or even just using tower attacks if that's not enough). Personally, for magichanging monsters, I prefer waiting until I'm strong enough to capture enemies boosted by Prinny Baal Pirates and their op stats (though, admitedly, that's probably one of the last things you'll do in the game, if at all).
