What do the letters A and E on top of characters mean?
They usually appear on the top of characters when I execute their moves,

I believe they stand for (in) "Action" (as in, you've selected a move for them to perform, which you can still cancel/change) and "Executed" (they've already performed an action an thus are "stuck" in place until next turn). Perhaps not those words specifically, but it's mostly there for you to know which characters you can still command or not before ending your turn.

A= they're going to (A)ct. In D2 this includes Defending, which does not execute and gets replaced with a (D) icon in later titles.
E= they've (E)xecuted their action
Unfortunately there are no clear indicators for whether or not a unit has moved. Units can move or act in any order, and any motion can be freely cancelled before they act. Getting tossed does not consume the flying unit's movement or action, either (but it's common to consume their movement to get into a Lifting spot). This is pretty handy for setting up team attacks, just move units into position, do the combo, then reposition them to do something else.
