If you have a creative sound card there is a issue with this bit of hardware.

Hi, I found a solution to this problem. I have a new-ish sound card - Creative X-Fi Titanium HD, which sometimes doesn't play nice with hardware implementation of OpenAl. There is a software implementation of OpenAl that can help with problems like this with older games. The version I used I downloaded from
https://beamdog.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/206729933-Windows-My-Game-Won-t-Launch-Or-Is-Crashing-On-Launch
at the bottom of the page. You can go to
http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html
to find the project. This fixed worked perfectly for me. I hope it helps you.
