Steam Controller Issues

So for a game like Disgaea 2, using a controller is tantamount to a good experience. But I've encountered this strange problem whenever I try to use my PS4 controller. It's being used through the Steam Client (Steam Controller I think), but whenever I try to use my controller, I notice my FPS counter that's usually enabled in the top right corner dissapears, and the game lags tremendously.

Surprisingly, when I unplug the controller, the FPS counter returns, and the game runs much smoother (hovering at 50 or so FPS in the hub, and a full 60 fps in battle), but now I'm stuck with the crappy mouse and keyboard controls. I feel like this is some kind of scripting error with controller support but I'm not sure.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and does anyone know how to fix it?

Oh wow, so that's why I see that lag! I'm playing with an USB-wired Xbox One controller, and yes, the game runs more smoothly when I use the mouse and keyboard. I also have experienced a problem where disconnecting the controller causes the game to crash (every! single! time!).

I think there are several issues with controller support with this game. I'm not sure what can be done to fix it, however.
