Favorite hero? Favorite unit?
Hey guys, I just gave this game a second look and was impressed. Just bought. Looking forward to playing. What's everyone's hero? Favorite unit? And how come?

I haven't played in awhile but Tanis and the dwarf are good Heroes. As for favorite unit well never really had any good ones they seem to die leaving it to the heroes to get things done.

I don't know about favorite unit but I like Keplin as a hero.
He has a weak start but as he levels becames fairly competant. By the end of a scenario, I typically have him be able to dodge most attacks, sheild others, have an attack that damages all enemies and can teleport.

Varda the Slayer - is my favorite. For me it's only the unit outside capital, she do solo almost all battles. She requires help from other units only for first few levels, and her companions - Maya and Varda's brigade are quite powerful units too. Just equip best artifacts enchanted with tactical health regen and she will be ok, except magic users enemies. For battles with magic users equip Ring of Nullification and other spell resist items.
The Dwarf with the artifact creator is pretty much unstoppable in the late game- capable of killing the SK+army solo if you put enough effort into stacking bonuses- though by that point you could have won much earlier if you wanted to ]:)

The dwarf is probably the best in combat once he's levelled a bit because of his "Rampage" and "cold snap" abilities, but my personal favourite is Peregan The Ranger.

He's far from the best in combat, but his Falconeer ability that he can get by gaining a single level gives you a flying scout unit that can go over the whole map scouting and opening chests to get you crafting materials and recipes . It can even do non-combat quests at "weak" locations (if you armour and arm it a bit and maybe have some summon scrolls if it's a combat quest) and then you can use a Return Home Scroll to send any units you get back home.

With some spells and/or a summon wolf token, or a dark candle, the falcon can even free heroes trapped as statues and get you new heroes, far sooner than you'd get them if you had to wait for an army to do it.

And Peregan can become pretty good with a Guiding Longbow.

He's even better if you take The Tinkerer as your lord and customise him to give him Peregan as his starting hero, because the tinkerer lets you get Legendary Longbow plus recipes for all kinds of magic arrows (that you can also enchant). And Peregan (or other archers) can equip more than one kind of magic arrows at once.

On top of that some of Peregan's other abilities have a synergy with some of the Tinkerer's Sovereign Skills - and together they can get you a lot of extra loot from battles to craft items with.

Intresting how powerful falcon could be with the best equipment from tinkerer.

Just play the tinker and spam archers. He gets the ability to craft magical arrows, and you can stack 6 of them per archer for relatively cheap. They end up with about 30-40 combat power depending whether you also give them armor. If you want to make a super archer you can then enchant those magical arrows, and things become ridiculous from there.

Mostly are good except the one that start by Tyrant.
Just IMO

That is very good to know. I know this is an old post but I purchased the game today and have been having a blast. Just came on the forums to peruse for hints n tips etc and have a break from a 3 hour stint in SKR. Had ignored the hawk when upgrading Peregan not realising how useful it would be. Will be putting these tips to good use when I return to the game later :-)

I wouldn't replace the dwarf as tinkerers hero. The dwarf has the spell to teleport to snow squares, which is great for building outposts in distant areas (thus getting more shards/fertile land) Plus I'm pretty sure he gives the spell to spawn lairs, which is great for getting extra crafting components/XP

Thanks for another great set of tips :-)

Silindros the Avenger, because of utility and ability to get stacks of vengeance by being front line. And I kinda like his armor ;)

Human ranger or Dwarf Scout. Load up on archers and get the Free Ranged Attack skill. Then sit back and watch half the enemy army blow up before you even take your first turn. If you min max enough with items on your archers you can legit win the end boss fight before the first turn begins. Don't know how much more OP you can get than that in this game.

Raza the Necromancer (Archlich), her armor & weapon arsenal make armies replenish hit points during every battle (from the necromancer's circlet) and there's even a really cheap maul sword to be forged from the bones of your victims. I also dig the (higher) undead troop tree units.
Finally... strong Chaos & Wrath capabilities when casting spells... you can't get any better.

PS... this game would really enjoy new heroes, capabilities & unique troop trees.

I'd rather they rebalanced some of the worse sovereign trees like priestess, or tyrant. also the priestess spell that boosts stats should be repeatable. It's expensive enough mana-wise, gives randomized stats, and only affects 1 unit, so it would hardly be broken. Also, there should probably be some way for the priestess to craft charges for her uber spells, probably via radiant diamonds, and some way to occasionally find a radiant diamond in loot.
