I think it's a neat mechanic, and it gives the game a sense of urgency that the 4x genre can lack.
If you're after something slower paced then FE is probably a better bet, it's a superb game all in all.
I'd wait a bit on that. There is talk of updating FE:LH to receive many of the engine updates SK and SK:R now have. Check out that forum, I think it is in one of the stickied threads where Frogboy (also uses the Steam name Draginol, either way it is Brad Wardell, the Stardock CEO) says that there are plans in the somewhat near future.
