The multiplayer isn't dead, it's just most active on weekends.

VR sessions are rather short throughout the week, and pick up in length on weekends, which will show more active servers on the server browser.

Often times if you just make a room and play through levels as if you're playing in singleplayer people will just randomly join you mid-game after some time. :)
