Game not recognizing xbox controller after 12 hours

I played for about 12 hours, then the game decided to stop recognizing my controller.
I unplugged the Bluetooth dongle and plugged it in again, plugged in the controller itself via USB-C and added the steam mapping then removed it. I have obviously restarted my computer at least once.
I am using a normal Xbox controller.
My headphones are also BT and when the controller stopped working they made a buzzing sound and I had to turn them off and remove the dongle to get them to connect to my computer again, so I suspect it may be tied to BT functionality.
Since doing these troubleshooting steps, the controller works for Cult of the Lamb (only controller game I tested) but not Inquisitor: Martyr.

Hi! See if maybe any other periphery gets recognized as a controller mistakenly

I tried plugging the controller in via usbc with the bluetooth dongle removed, but I think the issue I had was I did not see the enable controller option on the options in the menu screen. (possibly because it is at the bottom of the box, and does not appear in the in-game options menu in the same place) I checked enable controller and it was back on again. my controller is currently working again and i'll try checking the box to start with if my bluetooth dongle hiccups again.
