Throne of Lies®: Medieval Politics

One perhaps ridiculous question
A lot of things about the game look good, but I don't like games where you lie, so I ask hesitantly about a 'game of deceit', can you play this without lying?

I understand the likely answer is 'no', but there's a chance since I don't know the game - just as asking 'can I play a shooter without killing' is sometimes 'yes' with stealth options, for example.

Because if the answer is yes, I'll try this. If not, doesn't make it a bad game, just not what I'd like.

Regardless of Good or Evil faction, you can give whatever accurate information based on your deductions or abilities, but you should never claim truthfully if you are the Evil faction.

What happens is that if you say "I am the Reaper", the Prince will lock you in jail for 3 nights and then execute you without trial. Why? Because they will think you are a Fool who is disturbing the investigation. Then you will not even have a chance to play as you will spend every night in jail.

If the Prince is dead, the court must then decide whether they want to spend a day and waste someone's abilities to execute a suspected Fool. So they will hesitate to vote execution on you even if you open claim as an Evil class. But eventually...a Knight may attack you, a Princess may Flirt you, Drunk forces you to attack him, or Butler occupies you every single night, and the court will execute you. And they will choose to investigate you in particular because you attracted attention by openly claiming to be Evil.

In a nutshell, claiming truthfully is not sustainable.

Staying silent will also get you killed depending on how fast the other players give out their claims. Because silence = suspicious (even if it isn't actually lying)

But, if you get a Neutral class like Alchemist/Mercenary, then of course you can try being honest. You don't have a reason to lie then.

Sounds like this game's not your type then :steamhappy:
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Hmm, it may not be your style for 1/2 the time. Lying depends on randomly-assigned faction -- as a good guy, you're most likely going to always be telling the truth.

However, as a bad guy, you're trying to blend in with the crowd and get others executed in your place, diverting them constantly.

Thanks for the reply - it sounds like the answer is 'yes, you can play honestly for certain classes, but those are randomly assigned so you'll only get them 1/2 the time'.

there was one time where i openly claimed reaper (because i was testing this exact question) and had won due to the fact people ignored me. they only knew i was reaper when they asked for some logs (it was already my win by that point) and shared all my killings. so yeah being honest as evil is a nice way to stall, but not the best to win

It is indeed a bragging right if you win as evil by claiming to be evil. It isn't completely impossible as it depends on the player personalities and classes that happen to be in the game. One EK can stall a court for daaays Xd

But for every five players that choose this tactic, I presume that only one may win. I have witnessed four in my games, and you are the fifth.

Edit for OP: The risk of getting reported if you lose using this tactic is very high.

Yeah was going to point out... using a strategy that backfires 9/10 times such as openly admitting to being evil, is usually considered gamethrowing.

Bottom line the long and short of the game, is good guys win when they kill all of the evils. The good guys find out the evils with a combination of using their abilities at night, and talking to everyone during the day. Generally speaking no answer is assumed to be an admission of guilt, the only hesitation on executing someone who isn't claiming or is claiming evil, is the risk that they might be a fool (a class which has the goal of being executed and causes harm to people that voted to execute him). Though being assumed to be a fool is also a problem, as several good guys have abilities to kill at night.

The real question is, what is your main opposition to lying, in the context of a game. Sure in real life it's not a good trait, but in a game where the real goal is to have fun, challenge yourself Is it really lying in your world view if everyone consents to being lied to at the start of the game.

Since this is a game and you aren't actually hurting anyone by lying, real-life skills are learned:
  • It can teach you the art of negotiation.
  • You can more-easily identify people who may be lying to you (or telling the truth).
  • Convince others to listen to you when there are 15 others talking.
  • If you ever land a job in sales, this will help you convince people to buy the product.
