If you looked at some of the reviews, (Here's mine: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/id/PlanterrorGaming/recommended/595280/) You'll see that there is a very steep learning curve, and the current tutorial really doesn't do much to help.
So instead, I'll just let you get that info yourself.
Some of the Steam guides that are up do a good job of getting in to the game a little bit, here's some of my reccomendations:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1702884901 (How to write decent logs)
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1771410382 (Fake Claiming as a member of the Unseen)

Another thing you can do is watch other people play. in the Throne of Lies discord server (https://discord.com/invite/tol) there is a channel called #twitch-plays-tol, there will be occassional youtube videos and streamers posting their videos there. Aside from that, here are a couple of newbie-friendly streamers:
https://www.twitch.tv/davosse (Davos is also a moderator of the discord server!)

I know this may be a lot to take in, but once you start opening up you'll get used to the game. It's a lot of fun, and (at least I think) a lot more balanced than Salem.
As for the account, it's passwordless and email is optional - You use a token-based Steam login. There's not much data to give. There's tons of data connected to your account, but almost none is personal except the usual that you'd expect.
The tutorial more so introduces the genre and UI than specific mechanics/classes (a full tutorial would take a year to dev, like a standalone game, and would take hours to complete -- it's sort of like typing ... just know the basics then practice/observe).
Why play? We're like a super complex "Among Us" or "Town of Salem" where complexity brings about replayability and a sandbox of combos. We're essentially a tabletop game in disguise. I suggest you join the Discord to ask questions in #general or #ask-a-guide:

I play DnD, Huge fan. Might wanna be the fly on a wall. My interest is there, was researching from above post last night.
I live a cautious life, we didnt get this big ass steam account unchecked by using a lot of 3rd party this and that you know. It was just....paranoia. I might tickle the ivories.
Imagine if you're playing 5e (I have a Moon Druid myself), you try to attack a guard for a potential surprise attack but get caught -- you are now trying to convince others that you are NOT the bad guy, possibly pinning it on someone else (or being on the other side interrogating). Let's say as soon as you make a convincing argument, you silence the opposing party until the round ends; people may believe YOU over the actual good guy. You'd then dispatch the naysayer during the night to ensure that silence is a finality.
Meanwhile, each night, the bad guys get more powerful, but the good guys get more information. It gets pretty intense in a fun way! This is pretty much the game.
I'd suggest watching a few YouTube videos to see if it's your cup of tea. In either case, you got the game for $1 -- there's really no risk in just trying it. Sort of like a slow-starting epic TV series, be sure to give it some chances as you likely *will* lose your 1st match and *someone* has to die Night 1 (if unlucky). Information overload is common, but worth the learning curve.
It's pretty much this: If you don't quit after several matches, you'll probably be obsessed and play it for 100's (some 1000's) of hours :) I'd say it's often black-and-white. However, if you've yet to experience the genre, it's highly recommended. Don't skip the tutorial ;D Study class cards a bit with TAB to just see what kinda things classes do. Then give it a shot!
