some kind of special enemy that requires a different method of execution than the average machine generally being more difficult and dramatic

Endless mode would be better with some sort of occasional challenge level like this to shake up the usual formula of the game mode, IF implemented correctly, but the issue is after the game launched out of early access the devs seemingly won't add any more drastic game play changes, like when they added the dash.
