Grey Hack

Grey Hack

No hacking/coding skills. Playable?
Title, seems like something fun to dabble in - I have a very very basic understanding of computers and only ever really played hackernet, a /bit/ of uplink and had trouble even understanding that. But this game seems fun - would it be worth it for me to pick up?

If you found that it is not.. maybe take a look at Hack hub, or Nite Team 4, both have story wise basics that are "pretty" applicable to IRL.

ya i just got the game few hours ago.
Basic understanding of Networking, and basic use of a Linux Terminal is beneficial to start. I definitely recommend starting in Single Player.
You don't need to know any programming languages, the game has it's own and it's a very simple one. There are some tutorials in game (not much) and guides on Youtube, I would recommend watching a few once you get into the game and at least learning how to read the code, it will save a fortune in scripts and storage space.

It's not as necessary in single player because all of the networks run v1.0.0 on everything, so once you buy a script that works on 'HTTP v1.0.0' for example, it will work on all networks where there is an open port running HTTP. There are so many versions in Multiplayer, you will end up buying multiple scripts for every new network and rarely using them again.

ALWAYS BUY .SRC VERSION OF SCRIPTS, NOT EXE!

Read the code. Once you have a script that scans a specific local library for vulnerabilities, you can make one for each of the different libraries. if you're feeling confident in your coding abilities, you can make one that scans all of them. Try to do the same with a remote script that targets an IP address and a specific Port/Server such as SSH. If you find a script that works well, it's a good place to start for building your own tools.

In the Manual.exe program, there is a button to bring up the source code of all the most common commands such as 'nmap', and you can reverse engineer all of this to try and build your own tools instead of wasting money and storage space buying them.

I heavily recommend getting nmap at the very start of the game by doing this. Copy and paste the code into the Code Editor, compile and save it as nmap.

Sorry for the late reply, your correct but it does have a demo you can play.

Happy hacking!
