Firewall Exploit not Disabling?
Maybe I’m missing something (very possible), but I’ve tried five different kernel_router exploits for the correct router version, and the firewall never actually disables. I’ve run them both as guest and root — the notification always says the firewall is disabled, but every time I try to use the ssh command, I still get the “target is behind a firewall” error.

Any help would be appreciated! I bought this game a while ago and recently decided to give it another shot, but I’m quickly remembering why I stopped. I really want to enjoy it, but I’m genuinely confused why none of these kernel_router exploits are working for me.

Maybe you're not using a firewall disabling exploit? That would account for the firewall not being disabled and the message.

One alternative way If you are pivoting internally to a firewall, you can root that with a kernel_router hack then pivot onward towards the target behind them.
I have experienced this as well. Changing the Deny All rule to Allow All doesn't impact anything. I have to shell into the router with a kernel_router.so exploit and work from there.
