Cable redirection?
Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't recreate this structure or any variation of it. Even the smallest possible version of it collapses immediately. Reinforcing the bottom beam doesn't help it keep its structure. If I connect the two pivot points, it separates the cable segments. The long sections turn red from strain and then break, while the short sections stay purple and provide no support.

Is there some trick to making a pivot point?

I think I understand your confusion. See the screenshot above for an example that works. The cables on the far left and far right need to be attached to anchors. The platforms/beams on the bottom left and bottom right need to be either attached to anchors or sitting on solid ground.

It's just part of the learning curve instructions they're showing you. You're not expected to build these. The top structure is to show you what won't work, and the bottom structure, although rickety-looking, would work as long as the other end of the cable is attached to something. The picture assumes that. They're just showing you how you can extend a cable over a beam, then redirect it down to support the deck below. The point was to learn to redirect cables and not use shallow angles with cables. What they are not showing you is an anchor point. Your cable would need to be anchored to something strong enough to hold your bridge up.

I was talking about the bottom structure. It doesn't work for me, it collapses or the cables break within seconds.

I know. But it's not supposed to work. What are you attaching the cables to? Like I said, you're not expected to build these. Under the right conditions, there are times when you must use cables because of weight. And sometimes they must be redirected. They're just teaching you how.

Yeah, I get that it's a tutorial and it's showing how to use a core concept of the game. That's why I'm concerned that it's not working. If it can't support the smallest structure possible with this configuration of just a couple tiny pieces, why would it be useful for supporting anything larger?

(Anyone) If you're able to make this structure hold in Test mode, post a screenshot.

That is helpful, thank you. The supports are essential and should have been included in the diagram. Otherwise it looks like it's possible to make a free-hanging bridge.

I did some tests to see what the limits are. The pivot points can be reinforced to hold more weight, ideally with horizontal supports (lower right). A pivot can be used to string multiple runs of cable, so adding more vertical cable segments divides the weight between them (not included in the screenshot).
