I very much hope for oold system to return, or at the very least, to have it as an option/mode to turn on or off - this way those for and against it shouuld be satisfied, I wouldn't care which option is the default.
You have unlimited randomly generated new maps that can give you exp. Even if the system works for those maps too, they disappear when you finish.Each map will give you 1 or more new ethereal maps that also give you exp.
Saying "I want the old system" is dumb. You have to change everything to make it work.
There is another solution, too, which is that basic campaign maps are the only way to get EXP and they give very few items, while ethereal maps give no EXP but give lots of items and runes. That could be an interesting dynamic.
