Ethereal maps disappearing conditions
Do these map disappear if we lose them? Or only when we succeed in clearing them?

I'm accumulating a lot of such maps to unlock distant levels, and I want to know if it's worth using runes to play ethereal maps, or if it's better to play it safe.

Etherals stay if you fail to clear them, and if I recall correctly, non-permanent runes are "locked in" after you fail. You need to either win the map or purge them to use new ones.

And for runes, indeed, after you chose some, you can't change them unless you purge them or destroy the map.
