If you are getting absolutely nothing when you try to use a controller, go into big picture mode, go to settings and click controller settings. Uncheck every box! Then exit big picture and try it again.

I hope this works for you. I'm using an Amazon Basics Xbox One Wired Controller and this fixed it for me. I have had this issue with others games.
