Is there a map that you can look at during gameplay?

Each screen is so small, and I can imagine there are a ton of screens, and lots of exits from each one to other screens.

Does the game have a map that you can refer to to get your bearings, and see the world, and what you've explored?

No, there's no ingame map. You don't really need one though. Most areas you visit are fairly small in size, but the overworld hub that connects to each level do keep track of which places you've beaten.
