How do you start a siege battle?
When I attack a settlement I only ever get the option to 'maintain' a siege. At which point after a few turn the garrison will usually try to break the siege before surrendering a turn or so later.

I want to be able to attack the actual settlement in a set battle and use siege engines (ram, siege tower etc.) How do I do this since the option is always greyed out when a attack a settlement.

You can select the equipment on the siege screen menu. Just click on the equipment and it goes into the build queue, it tells you how many turns it takes on bottom of the item card, more equipment can be added but the speed of building them depends on how many men / units you have.

Once you have one of these pieces of equipment built the attack button will no longer be grayed out.

As a side note, later in your campaign you will be able to build catapults.... this counts as a siege weapon and will allow you to attack straight away.

Might seem a daft question (don't know your past TW game experience) Have you selected siege equipment to build? Usually it will take a minimum of one turn, depends on how much equipment you want. Once you have at least one siege item built you can launch the siege,

First total war game so I'm new. So once the equipment is build you can launch it?

You select the equipment you want, (towers and rams) and the next turn you will be able to attack, or continue making more equipment.

Not all settlements have walls. You can only build siege engines against walled cities.
