Why is the game locked at 60 fps? (solved) [old] <out of date>
You don't need any "special k" garbage if and when you run on Linux, where it will run at max/unlocked fps out of the box through wine/proton using dxvk.

You want to disable vsync entirely in your AMD settings and run the game in exclusive fullscreen mode. Windowed or borderless windowed will not work.
To lock your fps to 144, I recommend the free software RivaTuner as it won't add any extra input lag from doing so.

Yeah, I have a 1440p, 144 Hz monitor and this game is super weird about framerates and refresh rate. The game supports higher *frame rates* (if you force Vsync off in your video card control panel, and run in exclusive fullscreen in-game), but it still forces your monitor to run at 60 Hz (which is why it doesn't look any smoother).

The only way to override it is to use the program Special K[pcgamingwiki.com] to force the game to run your monitor at 144 Hz.

For me I honestly just kinda didn't want to bother with all that so I'm just playing at 60 Hz, 60 FPS.

I don't think you recognize my problem.

My fps is already uncapped, but it still feels (and looks) like 60.

I understood what you said, and the solution I mentioned is what worked for me and many others. I didn't need to download Special K.

I'm using an Nvidia GPU though. I can only guess AMD cards behave differently, then, because I've never heard before that a game would be able to force a monitor to a lower refresh rate despite rendering more frames.

If you go into your NVIDIA Control Centre and turn off V-Sync from there it unlocks your FPS in the game. I was getting over 200 FPS using an i7 4790K amd a GTX 1080Ti 11GB

Apparently you can also use Special K without having to install the whole program by just copying the .dll file. Following these instructions[pcgamingwiki.com], you just unzip the .7z file, copy "SpecialK64.dll" (because the game .exe is 64-bit) into the main Crash Bandicoot folder, and rename it to "dxgi.dll" (because it uses DX11).

Image[i.imgur.com] showing how to do it in one step.

I didn't even have to configure anything in the Special K overlay that pops up, it just automatically launched in 144 Hz mode, vsynced at 144 FPS (didn't have to change anything in my Nvidia control panel either) and now the game looks freaking insanely smooth. 👍

Edit: Also note, the in-game options will still list the Max FPS as 48 (because it's the highest multiple of 144 that's still at or below 60), but it doesn't affect anything when using this method. Despite what the option says, the game is running at 144 Hz (according to my monitor OSD) and 144 FPS (according to Steam FPS counter and my eyes).

If your monitor shows 144hz / 120hz it doesnt mean you get 144fps / 120fps ingame fps aswell, i needed to change the fps cap in the Special K settings to get the frames matching my hz. (control, shift,r / start + select) The setting is on the main screen.

This also has me a bit worried about the Spyro Reignited trilogy, which I also bought on the summer sale. It's not the end of the world, but I was kind of expecting more from a game that use quote "your system" as a sale pitch in the trailers, when it's not.

RX 580 (19.6.3), i5-7600K, 16 GB, Win10 (1809) x64
ASUS MG248 (144hz) @ 1080p freesync monitor

Also why are none of the config files available for the user like in every other game? I've made broken games (not saying this one is) to work flawlessly in the past, by altering my settings, but with this game all you get are unreadable .sav files?

================================ FIX ================================

1) download https://github.com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/releases/tag/sk_0_10_2
2) unzip or open your .7z package and copy SpecialK64.dll into your game directory.
3) rename SpecialK64.dll to dxgi.dll and launch your game.

So many people claim to unlock the frame rate but yet from my experience, the game still runs in 60 despite frame rate counts saying otherwise (and some posters even go as far as to post 60fps limited Youtube videos as somehow "proof" of their success despite that proving nothing).

Your suggestion actually worked. If anyone here is like me and can actually *see* the difference in their monitor running properly at a high refresh rate and are frustrated at all of the "guides" on Steam to fix this, please look no further. I assure you this is the real deal.

10/10, thank you!

Ok i copied the dll in the directory and renamed it, the fps floats between 50 and 75, it's like the game is forcing to go down to 50 no matter what i try. I tried everything and nothing works for me

Now it is 75, but it's a bit laggy in the background, i don't know how to explain it properly, any help?

I need you help, hopefully you will be able to help me...

I did every single step you mention, but now when i launch the game at the "Activition" screen shows 144 fps and when it goes to the main screen it goes back to 65 fps, i dont know why.

I got a r9-3900x and a 1070 ti + 32gb ram.
My monitor is a 2k at 144fps.

same here not sure how to fix that try with special k and migoto but same

Edit: I just fix it and it works. you have to enable sleepless windows thread on special k in advance framerate options. such an awesome tool maybe it was disabled on mine and is enabled on other by default idk but after I click that bum 165 fps average and IU can reach 240 but you feel the smoth wiht 100 + fps so morethan 120 is overkill for this game, now is so smooth.

Because the human eye can't see above 60.
Kamster 30 Dec, 2020 @ 6:02pm
Just want to take a moment to give my feedback on this. I spent about 2 hours troubleshooting since I bought this. Basically, it was a struggle just to get it running at 60, but even then, in spite of perfect 60 and perfect frametimes in RivaTuner, the game was doing some kind of weird constant stutter that made it unbearable to play.

By applying the SpecialK fix in this thread, now RivaTuner measures 63fps and slightly uneven frametimes, but the game is perfectly smooth with 0 stutters or microstutters.

Settings to get this working fine are:
Ingame: Fullscreen, 48fps
Radeon: No framecap applied (if I apply a framecap, even 60, the game stutters again)

I can't get the game to go to 144 with the instructions here, but at least it's stutter-free now. What an absolute garbage of a port, if it hadn't been for this thread I would have refunded it.

Thanks to everyone.

Just tried this, and my framerate shot up from 63 to unlocked. Game feels super smooth now. Thanks!
