Unfortunatly we live in an era where the only thing that matters is getting games more and more difficult in order to make sick, pro guys excited instead of creating challenging and enjoiable products.
After all, the problem without rubberbanding was that one could outrun (no pun intended) the competition quite easily which could end up being boring. The problem with the rubberanding as it is now is that it's easy for opponents to catch up with the player but hard for the player to catch up with the opponents.
If the rubberbanding was adjustable, it would also allow for a mode where the opponents would stick closer to the player and each other for a more intense experience. It would improve the game for every player no matter what level of challenge they prefer.
