Looking Forward to a Linux Release
I'm looking forward to a Linux release and be able to play it natively. Since it's a Unity game, it should be rather easy to build. Keep up the good work!

Unfortunately, we have no plans on a native Linux port for Wave Break. We're a very small studio, and Linux users currently make up less than 1% of Steam's userbase, so it is quite difficult for us to actively maintain a Linux build that we would be happy with in confident with no bugs.

Luckily, Steam Play allows Linux users to play the Windows version of Wave Break! When it comes out, feel free to give it a try. Users have told us that it works pretty well!

We'll be having an open beta very soon, so you'll get a chance to try Wave Break via Steam Play and see if it works out for you.

Will Wave Break have continuing support via Proton/Steam Play?

Will Wave Break have continuing support via Proton/Steam Play?
Developers typically do not directly maintain support for Proton/Steam Play. Steam Play is a Valve supported Steam feature. If you find an issue with Wave Break with Steam Play, please contact Valve!

LOL No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm asking for continued support with Proton functionality for Wave Break, going forward.

I'm sure none of us intend to come of as heated, but this is exactly the reason why Linux users are a minority. If we had native binaries for our favorite games we would be incentivised to support them. :steamhappy:

I'm a big fan of linux; I use it when I run any kind of server. If we were a larger studio, we would dedicated the resources to natively supporting linux. However, we're not, so its not financially viable at this time. I do hope that a Linux desktop pops up that blows Windows out of the water, which drives a huge amount of gamers to it!

I'm really sorry to hear about the lack of Linux support.

Well here's hoping Wave Break is successful, maybe enough to aid in development of a Linux port. :)

i can report that for me, it is running perfectly under proton

Wow, very awesome response as a developer! I'm so glad valve is investing money into Proton, and the fact that you are actively aware of it is great. I've seen some developers use specific DRM or features that break proton, or even intentionally block it. I'm one of the "Crazy" linux users with a $4,000 System 76 gaming laptop and insane linux gaming desktop, and I understand that not every dev can afford to do a linux port (especially with the percentage of linux users on steam being so small) but actively bringing up proton on your forum and not actively blocking it? You just earned a sale! I think that's what other users are asking by "Continued proton support". As an example, I bought fall guys on launch day (as did all my linux friends) but a few weeks in they patched it to use Easy anti-cheat (which doesn't work with proton) thus breaking the game for linux users. In this case, I think everyone's asking if you have plans to intentionally block proton users, but based on you recommending that users use it, it doesn't sound like that's the case. This game looks cool anyways and proton support is icing on the cake for me. Cheers! :)

Very curious, Do developers get statistics from valve on how many users are running their game on proton? I have a feeling that a lot of us simply have a Windows 10 Pro SSD and a Linux SSD, so I'm curious if steam play makes me show up as a "Windows user" in those statistics, or the fact that half the time I'm logged into steam from windows and the other half of the time from linux (As I write this post my linux laptop is logged into steam and my desktop is logged in on its windows partition haha) so I'm curious how those are counted. Regardless, I personally don't care of the linux port is native or not, as long as the dev doesn't intentionally and actively try to block proton from working. Just my two cents. Regardless, I know some linux users refuse to even boot windows (which I totally understand) and I'm curious if valve is only counting users who only log in through steam on linux, or counting users who log in to both linux and windows versions of steam, because a lot of linux users instead of refusing to buy a game or play a game without proton support will simply reboot into windows to play it, but other users don't. Sorry for all the questions, I'm a data analyst for a living so these are the kinds of questions that come into my mind, I'm a big linux advocate of user friendly operating systems like PoP_OS! and linux companies like System76, my 144hz Geforce 3080 linux gaming laptop (System76 oryx pro) gives me hope that linux gaming computers will grow over time. Thanks for making an awesome game! :)

Nice build! To answer your question, I believe the answer is that the OS reported is the one the player has logged the most hours on. If you play on Windows for 10 hours and Linux for 5 hours, it'll show you as a Windows users. If you play on Linux for 11 hours, now you're a linux statistic.

I could be wrong, but I remember reading this a few years ago.

Oh man, I hope that's not true, because then I'm basically "reporting incorrectly" to valve. My linux install is for everything I do, and I only reboot into windows to play multiplayer games that won't run on linux with proton thanks to DRM. Thanks for answering that question for me!

Best Regards, -Seth

I think it's per-game, so maybe not a worry!
