[Fixed] Fatal Error! Crashes
Hey Folks,

Just reinstalled MW5 on steam after a few years and for a half day or so I've been encountering frequent (once per mission or between missions) "Fatal Error!" crashes and I finally seemed to have discovered some version of a fix: disabling/unplugging my second monitor. Posting here for future reference in the event others encounter issues like this.

For reference:
Windows 10
Asus Z87 Pro
i7-4790 3.60 GHz
16GB RAM
GTX 1080Ti

I did complete the following troubleshooting unsuccessfully before arriving at this fix (in no particular order). These were done one by one and did not fix the issue.
- Restarted
- Updated graphics drivers
- Tried various settings changes (including all low/off, vsync on/off, sharpening on/off, low resolutions)
- Tried all windowed settings
- Tried forcing DX12 (-D3D12)
- Monitored GPU and CPU performance/temps during gameplay (nothing noted indicating hardware failure)
- Verified integrity of game files
- Disabled, manually removed all mods
- Uninstalled, reinstalled the game (on an SSD)
- Deleted all saves
- Uninstalled, reinstalled on an HDD
- Increased TDR waits using registry keys TdrDelay and TdrDdiDelay (a common fix for UE4 crashes)
- Enabled integrated graphics for secondary monitor (via BIOS), and plugged HD secondary monitor into mobo via DVI (after discovering that the crashes stopped after unplugging the monitor form my GPU- note that using integrated graphics here didn't seem to matter- after I plugged the monitor in to the mobo- I once again continued to see the crashes).

If you're experiencing very frequent Fatal Error crashes with Mechwarrior 5 and you have multiple monitors, try unplugging a secondary monitor, it might resolve it! Again posting here for future googlers.

If anybody is aware of a method for resolving this kind of issue without actually having to unplug your second monitor whenever you want to have a MW5 sesh (or if I've overlooked a simpler fix), I'd be very interested...

I've got the same issue, and powering down the second monitor does work. But did you ever find a better fix?

Yeah, if you're using Nvidia, and outputting audio via HDMI to your monitor, and having secondary monitors, it likes to crash stuff.

I've managed to stop it happening for me by always using an alternate audio output, like a headset or bluetooth speakers.

No more crashing.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion
