Mercenary allied lance?
I remember they used to actually engage the enemy now all they do is drop in and follow me at a breathing down my ear speed. They don't even engage the enemy until said enemy is right in front me and maybe only 1 or 2 of the mercs respond. For the most part they just get in the way or stay behind me and don't let me back up. Were they always this useless? I seriously remember them actually fighting and making themselves useful.

In my own experience it has always been rather random. I remember once the merc leader acted like it was his own mission and said something to the likes of "We'll show you how it's done!" and they promptly went forward toward enemies/some kind of objective.

Other times, and I believe that's the majority of my experiences, they just follow me around blindly and even listen to my calls when I use F1.

All in all it is probably linked to the quality (rank/experience) of their AI. Like most things in this game.

Well you can use TT AI mod and either YAML or Mod options you can increase the ai max attack range to 1000m. Vanilla is 300m IIRC?

Also I remember Wayz having problems increasing enemy ai max range? Something about his CPU having problems? Not sure for the life of me. (Certainly taxing on the PC regardless)

Vanilla AI max attack range is 300m? Are you kidding? Your teammates never use their large lasers or LRMs?

Do you always place your medium lasers in group one or something?

Wow there's so much about this game's AI I just don't or didn't know.

Setting up the weapon groups for AI is crucial in vanilla. Basically how the AI act is that they go thru the weapon group in sequence from 1 to 6. So if you have a specific weapon you want the AI to use more often (or more to the point, consider to use more often) then you should place it in group one. I always place melee (if even) on 6 for AI, for example.

This is part of the reason why you sometimes have stupid results like a Panther doing nothing but bumrushing the enemies instead of staying at range with its PPC. Not enough heat management and if you put a med laser and place it in group one then it will think you want him to get in optimal range for that weapon first and foremost...

Also AI completely ignore chain fire groups.
