What did he mean by this?
MW4 came out more than two decades ago. It came out during the PS2 era. The oldest one came out during the FamiCom/NES era.
Battletech is much older than Warhammer 40K.
The games are not way behind the lore. All the lore was already published like a couple of decades before MW5 even came out. However MW5 Mercs is set in 3040ish, it's not "behind the lore" it's just set in a specific timeframe in the history of the lore.
We have enough games you have HBS Battletech and PGI's MW5 games, and MWO is still a thing. That's actually a lot. The following is strong but mostly OGs like myself who've been in this hobby since the 80s. Kids these days normally don't care about mecha, so it's a niche genre for the main gaming market.
I mean, heck most kids don't even know what Macross or Robotech is, never heard of Super Robot Wars and the only thing they know about mecha is they heard their cool uncle talking about Gundam.
I mean if 4 is 20 year old that is crazy so the others must be ancient!
Coming from battletech and not knowing battletech was mech warrior then finding the lore is a massive eye opener but I bet many people are in the same boat.
I didnt know it was older than warhammer either!
I have played final liberation which lets you use the warhammer mechs the titans but never seen older mech warrior games like that?
I dunno why this community is on edge seems if anyone new asks a few questions you all go crazy?
Im just expressing my interest in the mech warrior universe... maybe that's why it didn't go mainstream since the fans are toxic af?
70s era was the Age of Super Robots (Getter Robo, Mazinger, and a ton of things you never heard of). 80s era was the Age of Real Robots (Gundam, Macross, and a ton of things you never heard of). 90s era was the Age of Emo Robots (Evangelion and clones).
After that the genre pretty much fell into ruin into the mid 00s, with occasional glimpses of awesome like Darling in the Franxx and a Gundam show every few years or so to sell more Gunpla. But in general kids from the 00s and onwards don't care about the mecha genre, so no surprise you don't even know about it.
Just ignore the old farts, a lot of us are grumpy old men with Gatekeeper tendencies.
About the "lore": let's just say this - anything beyond the Clan Invasion is akin to beating a near-dead testosterone-filled horse suffering from a heavy fentanyl withdrawal. It gets extra stupid crazy real fast, though with huge time skips, ironically. So, the majority of popular stuff related to BT universe is associated with the Succession Wars or Clan Invasion.
Yeah i have zero clue what anyone of them are haha.
Closest thing to mechs before battletech for me was transformers!
Im watching a playthrough of mw4 now and I like the armor damage ui i think 5 is hard to work out how much armor you have left!
Just seems like I found a hidden gem with all this and people love armored core but never talk about mech warrior? MW is 1000% better i don't get it
However there actually are Transformers who came from Macross, like Jetfire. This is all going over your head though because I'm talking Gen 1 Transformers (which is Japanese-based) and you're almost certainly only familiar with Michael Bay Transformers.
Armored Core just has recency bias and is coming off From Software's newfound stardom after decades of Souls-like supremacy and the megahit that is Elden Ring. If it weren't for Elden Ring most players wouldn't even have given Armored Core 6 the time of day.
Yeah i didn't know that either!
I maybe have to look into some of the older stuff.
True I only bought armored core due to dark souls and elden ring and what a disappointment it was... it has everything to be cool but ends up boring as its just arena battles when you pull the curtains back.
I just love the full merc commander playstyle and so happy they are making a new dlc soon when im fresh to the game
Polygons. *Ancient Aliens Guy hands*
Ill have to take a look like I've said i tried final liberation which is ancient! And it was kind fun! A turn based old school warhammer game
I know 2's an old game, but the mission design and music was top tier and the gameplay was (and still is) great. It's definitely slower than 5, but it's a lot more hands off which I appreciate. The challenge was pretty on point, outside a few defense missions and some late game stuff really ramping things up, but that's to be expected. It's also got great atmosphere. It also controlled really well.
You can get the DOS version running pretty easily on modern stuff. It's not much of a looker as it's a 3D DOS game from like 1995, but it has it where it counts.
