I bought this as I liked Transport fever but soon learned its far more complex and difficult to understand on what to do? Challenging to say the least.

Jokes aside, this is an honest review of Workers and Resources: Soviet Union. In overall, it’s a very good city+economy manager game, but only if you like complex games with steep curves and looking up videos how things work or can be done efficiently. This game has 20 tutorials and a tutorial campaign, but that's hardly enough help. You will be baffled by the complexity of the game and it takes about 20 hours to get the basics. Even with 68 hours, I still have to lot to learn about this game.

The only flaw this game has, are the clunky controls. I bought the game at 10 EUR at a discount, but the base game is quality-wise worth at least 20-25 EUR. Fortunately, there is DLC to address this

Like Simcity, you are in control of a city, which is either in a campaign or sandbox mode. However, this game is much more complex. Alongside zoning, roads, electricity, water, garbage, government services, budget management, you have to manage the following things as well
· heating,
· industrial production of product categories such as steel, food, alcohol, clothing, agricultural goods.
· Storage management of said goods.
· Vehicle management (government)
· Trade with other Soviet nations and Western nations.
· Transport routes
· Employment of your citizens, kid and school management
* On realistic mode, you have to haul resources, workmen and machines to building sites and thus you are faced with realistic building times or worse if not efficient.
As such, the learning curve is steep and though the game teaches you the basics in the tutorial campaign, it takes quite some time before you understand it.

==Controls==
In Soviet Russia, the game controls you. This is a serious flaw of the game. You can make straight, long car roads if desired, but if you lay a footpad beside it, it will be a straight as a straight path of a drunkard, due to entrance roads of buildings, crossing points and footpad connections of buildings. You cvan have better control with F1, magnet mode, but this not always the remedy. Placing buildings in the same angles as the road? Also quite flawed. Zoomed in while placing a building, larger than your current screen? Good luck, you have to zoom out first, and thus have to cancel your current building prototype.

Pop-up screens of buildings show a lot when most features are enabled, but much less when more things are disabled.

==DLC==
In Soviet Russia, you are paid to download content. I still have to buy the DLC and write about it.

==Bugs and stability==
In Soviet Russia, the bugs are stable, the game is not. Fortunately for you, this is not the case. On Windows 11, the game is stable, but it can have 6-10 crash-to-desktops in about 60 hours. Another gripe is that the game does sometimes for some reason start, but then it won’t appear in-screen and you can’t select the button, without Ctrl+alt+del to open task manager. Then the game can be selected to appear on screen. It might also not have the hardware settings at the start, but nothing really frustrating.

==Alternatives==

In Soviet Russia, there are no alternative games.
· Simcity 4, a hard game city manager at first, but when you learn it, it become decent to play, but without challenge or long-term goals, it can become tedious. The game has also no technology progression in time, you are stuck in the 2000’s and new buildings only become available when the city reach certain population numbers and other requirements.
· Simcity 3000, an even older game, every similar too Simcity 4. The game does have tech advancement, but a coal powerplant for example, can’t become cleaner in terms of emissions. Easier to play
· City Skyline, I haven’t played it, thus no good judgment of that game.
· Captain of Industry, more focused on the manufacturing of goods, but then again, I haven’t played it yet.

==Alternatives (complex games)==
* Automation. This is a complex engine+car builder game and in campaign mode, you are also tasked with running the factories and selling the cars. It requires at least 100 hours to learn it, but you also learn a lot about car technology. This game is still in development for around 20 years now, but well worth it.
* Project Zomboid. A difficult pseudo 3D zombie survival game set in 1993 Kentucky, United States. Still in development for around 15 years
