Cubism

Main menu appears below floor level
Hi,
I'm using valve index headset & controllers--for some reason every time I open Cubism the main menu appears below floor level and I can't interact/play the game at all. Anyone seen this problem before, maybe have some ideas how to troubleshoot it? Is there some launch option I can use to ... move the floor upward, only for launching Cubism?

Anyways--I love the game, I got about 1/3rd of the way thru the main puzzles before this issue started!

couple additional notes:
- I don't have floor height issues on any other VR games I've played (BeatSaber, VRChat, PistolWhip, HalfLife Alyx etc.)
- I've tried uninstalling Cubism, clearing cache/cloud files and reinstalling--this didn't help.
- I've tried re-running room-scale play room setup several times to recalibrate the floor--this didn't help.

here's a screenshot of what I see looking at the floor in the center of my play area

Hey Biggs,

Sorry to hear you're having this issue - it's odd this issue cropped up since the game hasn't been updated in a while - but I'll try to see if I can reproduce it once I get a chance.
One more question: do you know roughly when the last time was when you played where you didn't have the issue?
Hey Biggs, just wanted to give a quick update. I'm having some issue reproducing this issue, since I don't have an Index myself (just a Vive and the knuckles controllers). I'm gonna ask a friend of mine with an Index to do a quick check to see whether he has the same issue, so apologies for the delay on finding a fix for this!
If it's at all possible, could you record your screen as you launch the game and experience this issue? It might help me identify what is going wrong.

Hey Thomas! Very cool you're trying to fix this for me--makes me super happy :-)
I'm not experienced recording game video but I was able to capture launching it from Steam VR using OBS.
here's a link to the short video capture:

Also as far as when this started occurring... I can say I first started playing Jan 28 2021 and it was working fine. I think this issue started 2 or 3 weeks later... so mid February? That's my best guess, but I don't recall a specific update.. :-(

Thank you for sending this, I'll take another look at it!
That's pretty odd about when it occurred though, since the last update to the Steam version of the game was on December 14th of last year.

Thank you for sharing that video, that actually helps a lot! The menu getting stuck on the floor like that is likely on account of some sort of breaking error happening during start-up. Is there any chance you could share the most recent logfiles with me? These are likely located here:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\tvb\cubism\output_log.txt

I might be able to see if some error is occurring in there. Easiest way to share this might be pastebin.

Thanks again for the help in tracking this bug down!

oh - a tiny hunch: did anything change in your keyboard or language settings recently? I've had issues before with French/German keyboards where the savefiles couldn't load correctly so I wonder if something is affecting the game's ability to load your progress. (could also maybe be an antivirus or a read/write permission issue?)
Anyway, all just speculation for now - hopefully the logs reveal more :)

Oop--I'm just getting back to this, dang I wish steam reminded me better about unread things, etc. :-D

Here, I grabbed the output_log.txt file from my appdata path that you specified--here's a pastebin paste (I set to expire 2wks from now):

About the keyboard settings.... is that a Windows setting... a Steam setting?

I have Windows 10--and keyboard settings for that are set to 'English (United States)', which is what I would expect. I don't think that has changed at all on my machine.

*edit* My Steam application language setting is also 'English'. I haven't changed that at all afaik.

Thanks for sending this over! It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the keyboard settings then - but looking over the logs it looks like it something may have gone wrong in reading the save files :/

One thing you could try is to remove them from you disk to see if that fixes things (steam cloud saves should restore your progress).
Could you try the following when you have a moment?
1. Go to
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\tvb\cubism\
and move
0_steam_full.save
out of this folder and on to your desktop (as a backup)
If you have a 1_steam_full.save or 2_steam_full.save move these as well.
2. Launch the game again

Let me know if this resolves the issue. Normally, steam cloud saves should hopefully restore your progress.

If this doesn't work, could you please send me your save file via pastebin as well? Then I can see if I can reproduce the issue on my computer with it.

Hey Biggs, so there's a good chance the issue here was a corrupted save file. I just pushed an update (v1.2.6) which should handle this a bit better.
The good news is, if your save file was indeed corrupted this update will let you know once the game starts, and start on a new save file instead of blocking the game.
The bad news is that I won't be able to recuperate your save since it was corrupted :/

Hey Thomas! I tried removing just the '0_steam_full.save' and launched the 1.2.6 version and this did NOT fix my issue. I see the same thing with the menu stuck under the floor... however. I noticed there's also this other file in the same folder:
'0_steam_playerVariables.save'
When I removed this file ^ ^ ^ and re-open the game, I get the "press both triggers to start" prompt and I can play normally!!!

Fwiw I don't know where the file came from, but the file is dated Feb 1st, 2021, which matches up with when I started having this issue. After playing today for 20mins or so, the file didn't re-appear in that folder, so I guess it's not a necessary file. I also tried looking at the file in notepad... and it's basically a blank file, or.. none of the characters are recognized, I'm not sure. Notepad shows 52 spaces all on 1 row. No idea if that's helpful information at all.

Anyway I'm playing Cubism again, woo-hoo!

Thank you for following up Biggs!
And clever thinking in removing the player variables file - that must have been the one that somehow got corrupted. Currently, the only thing that files stores is whether you played the puzzle song (the play button next to the levels) or not - so luckily this wasn't storing anything important. I'll take note to make sure the game handle's the possibility of that file being corrupted more gracefully in the next patch!

Thanks again for all your help in finding the cause of this issue!
