am i missing something?

i spend ages trying to unlock stuff but then no matter how strong i try to get i get 1 shot by something big and then it only lets me pick 1 piece from all the crap i unlocked?

Your probably letting the core get destroyed or key connectors get destroyed. Where damage goes tends to be more important then how much damage is dealt. You only ever get to choose one extra piece to build around.
