How do you research? Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

I've got to the point in the tutorial where I need to research. I have four desks filled with workers, but when I hit research, it says "idle" and wont let me select anything.

You click on the button that you want to start research and then the workers on the desks will start and the bar will fill up.

As I explained, I do exactly that. Nothing happens. The button doesnt light up if it's supposed to. The workers dont work. The prrogression doesnt fill. I've sat with it in 3 speed and nothing ever happens.

Doesn't matter now though.

Does the bar always say "Idle"? Some buttons are locked since they require the previous research. So you can't research Capture The Flag Medium before Capture The Flag Small.
Does it still happen after a load?
