but not to exit the "ship area" i just was flying my exo fighter around and then out i popped

Yep, if the exo fighter is flown out the front of the bomber (where the player exits), it goes out easily but cannot get back in. Even after packing up the fighter, the player is still stuck outside. Definitely a bug.
