not a big deal for me but you could lose the lab if there was no teleportal inside

Yeah, that could be a problem. The entrance hitbox is closer to the middle, at which point the game puts you back out in the ocean rather than staying in the water cave area. It is possible to use cheats to reenter the lab.

Do you have a teleportal in the lab?
If not, you can press Ctrl+Shift+D to open the console and type in player.teleport('water_cave') after which you can simply swim down to the lab[\spoiler]
