Disable the steam overlay for Aground (right click aground in your steam library, click properties, and uncheck it in the general tab).
Disable any mods - especially ones you installed since the issue started happening.
The problem happens only after continuing a previously saved game.
For a new game it never crashes.
My guess is that there is something wrong when loading a save.
After loading a save, the game will crash after a random time, likely after a few dozen seconds. Rarely after several minutes. Then the image and sound freeze for a few seconds. Then it's like the game recovers, the sound is played again, the controls seems to trigger actual sounds like if we're digging or going to the menu, however the image remains frozen.
The game experience is not optimal without the image. :P
I can send you my saves by mail .
Notice I followed your advises: no steam overlay, no mods, windowed display. Version 2.1.2.

The workaround of "Run With Graphics Processor" is working like a charm! I'm fully satisfied.
Thank you very much David Maletz!
