Game Keeps Crashing
The game keeps crashing after I've been playing for about 30 minutes, and when it does, it tends to crash when loading a transition. I don't know if this might be related, but every time I go to rest/save, the game freezes for about a second or so. Is there any way to prevent the crashes, at the very least?

How much RAM do you have? Also, are you running other programs at the same time that may be using up RAM space? My first guess would be it's an OOM problem.

16 gb of ram. Also the only thing I'm running other than Aground is the Steam app.

I've been having the same issue. I just got my Steam Deck, and this seemed like a good game to play on the Deck. Not sure if it might be related to the Deck in my case, but thought I'd mention it.

I know I should be saving regularly, but even so, this is unacceptable.

Have you tried verifying the game files on the deck? RAM shouldn't be a problem there.

That's strange - I've personally tested the game on the deck and haven't encountered any problems. Have you tried restarting the deck? It could be an issue with your save file - can you export your save file (the green button on the title screen) and send it to me (david.m@fancyfishgames.com)?

If you have lots of worker bots - especially if they are stuck and trying to pathfind and failing, that can cause stuttering and slowdowns, but it shouldn't cause crashes.

This was still happening even after verifying the integrity of the files. I've tried to avoid it by only playing for about a half hour and then restarting the game. I don't have the save file it was happening on anymore, but I'll check if it's still happening. I'm still at the beginning of the game (starter island, last structure built was the orchard, just getting steel equipment, etc.), so too many NPCs probably isn't the issue.

I played for about 50 minutes before it crashed again. "Cannot export: Save corrupted." But it loads just fine. I tried creating a new game and trying to export immediately after completing the hut, it also said the save was corrupted.

I managed to find where the save files are stores. Do you want me to email you "saves .sol"?
David Maletz  [developer] 5 Aug, 2022 @ 5:24am
Sure, you can send me the saves.sol.

Alright, I sent the save file. I decided to just send the version from my desktop, since I believe it's synced up with the Steam cloud (so it should be the same file). As a quick test, I created a new game (on desktop), built the hut, and checked to see if I could export the save file, and it still said it was corrupted. So that in particular seems to be an issue with the Linux version, not just the Deck. Not sure if the periodic crashing was also happening on the Deck desktop for me, but I don't remember it doing so.

Some other interesting things I observed: when I tried to export the save file on desktop, it switched from full screen to a window. I've also had trouble getting the Linux version to detect my controller (a PS5 controller), but running the Windows version through Proton detects the controller just fine. I'll try playing the Windows version through Proton and see if it has any issues with crashing.

The corrupted warning when trying to export on linux is usually because it tries to open the file chooser and fails because the library it calls is missing. I think it needs libgtk2.0. But, there's no issue with the save file itself - I got the save file and I'll check it tomorrow.

Are you playing modded or vanilla (mods are auto-enabled)?

I haven't downloaded any mods, just installed it and started playing.

Make sure your steam deck is up to date - the steam deck has gone through several patches, and several of those updates have fixed periodic crashes like you're describing. I've had no issues for hours with the save the above user sent me after updating the deck.

OK, just got my deck a week ago.
Didn't receive any messages about updates, will check tomorrow and will let you know the result
