Kohan II: Kings of War

Kohan II: Kings of War

None of the Kohan games have achievements how lame is that?
Why is no one making a modern sequel to these games?

I would love a sequel to this game. This game came out way before steam was a thing so I can't blame them for not having achievements, but was one of the first strategy games where units would actually attack things on the way to a location instead of allow units to kill them while they kept running to an objective.

A proper sequel would be great. Kohan 2 was a step in the right direction but they should have worked harder in keeping the original art uniqueness of the originals.

The game is not bad but a bit old and there is a big competition in a genre which is not so popular this era. A sequel would be good or a rework for this game but the main reason there is no any of these is the lack of playerbase and money. Also the IP is now on another studio which basically just collects the little money if they get any after this game. Basically nobody playing the game, including me the total of players online at a time is 12-13 player in this and last year. Only one time reached 108 concurent players in few years since the debut on the Steam.

If the game could get a rework, adding a bit better graphics, expanding the story, adding more units or playable species to the game or just overhauling the system and modernize the UI the game would see an influx of new players. The only option for us players whom still playing the game to get the attention to the game or gift time to time the game to the friends whom not have the game and with a bit of chance they could enjoy it and spread the good words of the game.

Basically the game has all the foundations to be a good and popular rts but the nowaday trends are different. If the multiplayer part could improve a bit so you do not need to do tricks to play with others simply by making it peer to peer then the game would be more played. I wish someone will take this game and improve on it or make a true sequel.

Khaldun needs this.
No chance, the developers didn't release the IP and probably long forgotten by now.

TimeGate Studios was the developer but they bankrupt after the failure of Colonial Marines. Gearbox outsourced along with Sega the development to TimeGate Studios and the game was rushed, unfinished and caused a lot of backlash. Basically these devs were not suited for this kind of game because they never made fps nor with a new engine because previously they developed in Gamebryo - Custom built one.

I like achievements. It helps me to prolong my fun with a game trying to get all the achievements for a game.

+1

it's also a way to have a checklist of the stuff you can do in game, if achievements are content based.

Not exactly Timegate Studios also worked on F.E.AR. Extraction Point, F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate and Section 8 which are FPS, so they already had some experience with type of game and engine.
Unfortunately Gearbox put most of effort towards Borderlands 2 and only meddled with development of Marines by changing priorities for Timegate, same goes for Sega that wanted different style of game, so Timegate kind of didn't even know on what they should work on.
Things got even more complicated after release of Borderlands 2 when Gearbox started to work on Marines again and decided to redo most of game, in end it was complete mess that wasn't even properly doublechecked as whole mess with Xenomorph AI problems was in one letter, code includes word teather instead of tether, that would anchor AI to playable area, so Xenomorphs kind of just wandered around lacking one of base commands that was required to set up goals and priorities for Aliens.

Matt McMuscles made quiet nice video about this mess in his What Happened? series on YT.

Well then this information part is new for me because I thought they only worked on Colonial Marines as FPS. Still working on one fps before is not too much experience but the chaotic part what you wrote is true. Gearbox basically pumped all the money on Borderlands and other their own franchises and poor devs of TimeGate was confused. I think I did watched some similar videos on what happend with the game but the name not familiar to me so I'll give a check. Anyway thankies the correction also good work on Kohan2 :)

No problem, I've commented on it because it often looks like Timegate was incompetent, but from little I know about them it looks more like they were one of unlucky development studios that was able to do things properly if they had chance to do it(for instance F.E.A.R Extraction Point was recieved quiet well by players and Perseus Mandate wasn't that bad either, unfortunately original developers discarded it so it's non cannon part of franchise).
In case of Colonial Marines it was total mess and Timegate was kind of forced to take blame for actions of Gearbox and Sega, not that they was without any fault, but it's kindo of like blaming middleman contractor for following contradictory requests from two architects, that also meddled in construction itself.

Matt McMuscles usually makes vidoes about games for consoles and arcade, his What Happend? series is about various games and movies that had hard time during production either resulting in delays or outright box office disaster, most of my info about Colonial Marines comes from his video on YT so I've gave him credit for that.

Thank you very much, hope I'll be able to continue my work on Kohan 2 mod, for now it's rather complicated.
