Cannot use an Xbox controller to move or fly/ too hard to set up.
A gamepad would be a much better interface to play this game. It is not clear how to enable a gamepad to play or it is too complicated to do so.

If it's the same as a joystick you select the input in the top right drop down menu then select the input you want (it has a mapped readout down the bottom) you just select which one you want to do what task. Yes presets would be nice but really that's something we could do...

Same problem here. Manually setting the controller up is not possible since the game lists my controller as unplugged and doesn't react to inputs.

For some reason the game detects a first Joystick "J0" as unplugged.
Your joystick should be recognized as J1.
And you need to set everything to J1 as J0 will never be detected.

As I said when you remap make sure you are reassigning them to J1.

Or is it other parts of the remapping that you're having trouble with?

You can only remap to axis, but not specific buttons.
Walking the character is WASD on keyboard, but for joystick I have to use analog stick (as axis) or bust. DPAD is specific key, but not specific axis. We need to map specific key.

@OP
You have to disable the axis at the bottom.
After that you should see an add button binding portion on the top right.

I had to run the xbox app then the game, then I got it all mostly working though I couldn't fly for crap and I could find no setting for throwing your craft. Then I bought the game and the config setup is different from the play test, no way I can see to import the ones I spent hours manually setting and getting used to. It sucked and I can fly better with the keyboard so the xbox controller sits dusty and a waste of money.

I wonder whether they will be able to add other sensible defaults soon to the Xbox controller so I don't have to keep trying to work out what I should be pressing on the keyboard as my plane plummets to its doom...

Weird... My joystick is detected as J0 and works fine... My throttle is J1, and pedals are J2 (I think, might be the other way around).

The open test version last month never saw my Steam Controller though every other game does. I'm reluctant to jump in to the early access release while people are still reporting that their controllers are not detected.

Seems that it depends on what joystick it is considered.
Xbox One controller is J0 and 360 is J1, like if you use a PS controller it will be recognized as 360 and thus J1.

It's not to do with what the controller is. It's to do with device priority (at least, I'm 90% certain that's what's going on). My PS controller shows as J5...

J3 is my second joystick. J4 isn't even a joystick or controller in the normal sense. It's a mini keyboard thingy...

in that case perhaps your second joystick is connected first, or connected without the codex stuff so it got a more frontal order.

either way with that configuration you're going to need to re-bind everything anyway.
