Inquiring minds want to know.
Why was the decision made to limit the number of Steam Friends to 290? It's such an odd number (despite being even) that I'm assuming there was a logical decision to use 290 and not someone with an RNG that said "well, 290 it is then."

"inquiring minds" would have seen the weird number and then proceed to used their preferred search engine to find Steam friends cap is 250 + 5 per account level.

It's 250 base, then plus 5 per account level. So for you it's only 290. For me it's 760.

It scales.
I can have up to 1525 but I use far, far, far fewer slots than that.
The max is 2k.

Ask and you shall receive!

Your friends list allows you to manage and access all of your friends on Steam. The amount of friends that can be added to your list is initially capped at 250. Leveling your Steam profile increases the cap by 5 friends for every level earned.
You're level 8, so 8x5 = 40 + 250 = 290.

That's not what the term "inquiring mind" mean. Like, at all. A tech savy person would have done what you just described. An inquiring mind simply ask a question out of curiosity simply hoping to get a good answer.

Inquiring minds will simply need to ponder. Either that or self-query whey they require more than 290 others to feel fulfilled.
