why does steam now allow nsfw avatars?
steam has some extremely provocative avatars for sale, and i confirmed that some are cropped porn. some are even stolen from random sources online with no credit! Is this normal?

It's not, report them if you can
I've checked and saw nothing of the sort.
Can confirm I have not seen any of this

Can you provide any actual examples?

Because the only avatars you can buy are on the points shop and I never saw anything hinting at pr0n over there, even though I don't shy away from that stuff.

Users using a sketchy avatar... that's a whole other thing. They probably didn't buy those but added these themselves, and no: that's not allowed. Avatars cannot be "NSFW" because there's no filter applied to those.

There are a few anime ones making questionable faces but they are riding above the line enough to technically not count as nsfw even if the intent is obvious
I've never seen this.
Avatars are not allowed to be NSFW at all.
You should report them when you see them.

Can you give an example though?
Because that is indeed not a thing Steam allows.

They have, no action was taken now plan B of getting people to agree with them is in effect.
I've reported quite a few pornographic avatars and they were removed within a few hours. But those were all avatars uploaded by individual users. I'm not aware of any community hub avatars or points shop animated avatars that have pornography in them.

If you are aware of something like that, let Valve know because that's a direct violation of the rules (it's so important that there's actually a copy of that specific rule in bright red on the page where game developers can upload avatars.)
provocative ≠ NSFW
they shouldn't allow those kinds of sexual avatars. that's is freaking disgusting. I report anyone who has them. steam should be friendly for everyone.
Oh, no, porn on the internet? That's terrible! But where did you see it? I need the link so that I may avoid such blasphemy!

For a lot of people on forums, "I don't like it" == evil. The term they attach to it varies, though, but it's always something that Steam should remove, so they can now complain about Steam allowing something they don't like.

It's more along the lines of:

I don't like it, and I have nothing else to do, so I shall start an online crusade against it! Huzzah!

Thanks for the perfect example why people rarely if ever see things exactly the same way.

If it still on Steam even after it is reported then you need to have your eyes checked or make your own version of Steam so you can allow and disallow whatever you wish. Win-win for you.

Since you are no longer here win-win for us, too.
