How to start developing a co-op game on Steam without having a game or company yet
Hello everyone,
I'm interested in creating a co-op game using the Steamworks co-op framework. The issue is that I don't have a game yet not even a name or company. But I’d like to start building the co-op networking system.

From your experience, what should I do?
Can I register on Steam without a game name or company name, and change those details later?
Or is there an alternative approach?
Thanks

Start by developing an actual game. You can create a solo game and bolt on co-op later or create a co-op-first game but wither way, you need a game.

To develop a game, start with a concept. A basic back-of-the-envelope one. Then flesh it out. Then grab a copy of Unity, Godot or Unreal engine and get your feet wet with real game development.

I'm not sure why you'd want to develop a co-op system without first having any idea of what you'd be building it for. Maybe spend a year or two working out the concept(s) and such before worrying about getting yourself onto Steam.

At rhis stage, Steam registration has no benefit, and creating an actual company is just paperwork and expenses.

Start by making the game. Worry about marketing when you have something to market...

You can sign up as a Steamworks partner as yourself rather than as a business. But you don't need an appid to develop a co-op game.

How about having some coding skills to even begin???

If you have to start out by using a brand new account in a gaming forum, and asking other random users, you are already doing it wrong and will fail hard and fast.

You should be talking to and networking with other developers, and that won't be happening if you try to do it this way.

From my experience I researched answers prior to asking on forums, tends to be one of the first things to do as a programmer, research what you do not know.
