why are scam bots impersonating people on my friendslist now?
hi steamers.... steaming... steam... valvers... steamed.. yeah
the last 3 batches of bot requests (3-4 friend requests in the span of 3 days) has contained like 3 bots that copy the avatar and name of someone already on my friendslist. they dont really say anything and just remain offline
i do find it funny. steam accounts are just way harder to hack now and using a friends hacked account to send you a phishing link must be harder than just botting a fake profile

has anyone else seen these?

Yeah, all the time. It's just one of the types of scams they use. They'll pretend to be a friend on an alt and ask you to click their link "vote for their team" or "claim the free items" or whatever.

It's just an unending stream of these requests now. Hundreds every week. I've stopped paying attention to friend request notifications and checking each one. The only ones I respond to are those that come from people I've chatted with on the forums or in-game.

all seriousness though, just private your friends list or smth, they can't impersonate what they can't see

at this point, with the amount of third party steam-focused websites around. all of which catalogue every single steam user's every action on their profile. Im entirely convinced that theres a database they use to see all your items and their ID. even if i privated my inventory and friends, theyd still know from the 1/07/2025 that I had "epicgamer69420" on my friends list and "awp gayline" on my inventory

it usually isn't worth it to do that much research on a profile really, so it's unlikely any would do it since that information would likely be outdated since it could've been traded away sometime ago and/or that person changed usernames
