Loving the (S)alien
Just reminiscing about the "old days" where we would log into the Steam Summer Sale to discover some surprise game event that always nearly crashed the Steam Servers. It wasn't about the quality of the games, it was a quirky Community Thing back then.

To riff on song lyrics from the late/great David Bowie:
- "...believing the strangest things, Loving the (S)alien..." https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/profiles/76561198034385032/inventory/#753_6_17407792680 https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/profiles/76561198034385032/inventory/#753_6_13970275139

This is based on no evidence and the source is i made it up. But personally i feel like the grand prix is what killed it. That sale had so so so many bugs and issues and made so many people mad. I was lucky and was one of the people that got lucky with it. But it was a huge problem any way you look at it.

What happened there is people on Reddit got together and decided who would win every day, so the races were rigged every time.

No the way the race worked was it was a bunch of animals [ i dont remember which ones tbh]
Bird
Horse
bear

but one was just Corgi

And because one is corgi and the rest were stuff like "bird" everyone wanted to be on that team. And it broke almost everything for the event.
Corgi, tortoise, hare, cockatiel and pig.

The first Summer Sale video game that I remember was a game that was like a 3D Space Invaders shooter game. That one was actually fun enough to log back in and play a few additional times. I've always been surprised that Valve didn't try to use the event as a game introduction thing, where you get a preview of the game, and then can buy the full version during the sale event. But that was back when Valve was more of a Game Developer themselves, and not yet the online Wal-Mart of game sales.

Just thinking out loud - imagine if the Dota game series with a truly "massive multiplayer online game" was introduced via a teaser at the Summer Sales event. Dota has been extremely popular for Valve but the Summer Sale gave them a way to really connect with more customers than simply a game release, when they consistently held the gaming events year after year. I think Valve has lost out on a valuable opportunity when they had a "captive audience" for these Summer Sales events, and admittedly - I'm humored by the thought of millions of people playing Dota as a summer sales event kicks off.

I remember you could level up your Steam account really easily during that event. I can't remember how, but it likely didn't work as intended.
