2. There's thousands more games on Steam, than just CoD & BF.
There's literally thousands of games on Steam that aren't CoD/BF and you are free to buy & play any of those. Your myopia is the downfall here.
All of my 3000+ games on commodore64 still work to this day so i don't see why games today cant do the same.
(not the first account i deleted my first account was worth close to 3k but deleted that out of rage cant remember why was ages ago).
Games today do. Unless, that is, they require additional components such as servers that, due to reasons such as cost and maintenance versus number of players, are deemed no longer viable to keep online. The simple solution in most cases: don't play such games. Make no mistake though, had the technology existed back in the days of the C64, the same reliance would have been in place then, too. Now, assuming you're playing on actual hardware, your C64 games will last as long as the media they are stored on does; for the C64 that is generally cassette tape -- which even when the C64 was a modern system, was known to fail for a variety of reasons (including the C64's tapedeck chewing them up).
You say you only play free games today, games that typically utilise servers and online requirements. So why are you surprised when they shutdown to low profits?
The only games where I have spent such money and that have then shutdown are those that were online only, e.g. MMOs (mostly ones with monthly subs). That's part of an MMO's life. It's even mentioned in the agreements you have to, well, agree to when signing up. If you are having trouble with primarily offline games suddenly not working, 9 out 10 times, it's a problem with your hardware and software configuration. And in most of those cases, a little troubleshooting will find a fix, even if you have to think outside of the box.
For example, many years ago when I got a new PC, I wanted to replay the original Bioshock (long before the remaster was a thing). It worked flawlessly on my old PC but wouldn't launch on my new one. After a while of looking up potential issues, I discovered the fix: my new PC would only launch the game when a microphone was plugged into the front Mic In port. That's the nature of gaming on a PC. Expect things to break and have to find potentially weird solutions.
