You can remove the authenticator and not have to use the app, but then two-factor authentication will be done through your e-mail, and you'll also have to make trading/market approvals through the e-mail, which is arguably even more of a hassle.
Market confirmations for all items without using the app was silently added back shortly after the Spring Sale ended.
There was no announcement about the rollback of the "Relaxed Confirmation Requirements."
Damn, at least now I know it was not out of nowhere and not specific to me
