Downloads still suck.
I’m running at 50 mbps with 1gb+ speeds. Atrocious really.

Getting ~920 here.

:nkCool:
Windows or Linux?

I don't know -why- but my download speed have been pretty bad on Linux compared to windows.

And will continue to "suck" for you forever because it is either a hardware or ISP problem on your own side.

ISP issue most likely i.e. from 95% to 99% chance.

Hardware fault issue secondly likely - rare, but can happen.
(i.e. SSD or HDD about to go bad or already has, faulty RAM/motherboard/etc)

Steam issue -- less than 0.1% chance, I would say. :) Extremely rare, close to impossible.

Lots of unscrupulous ISPs oversell for how much bandwidth they actually have available, then they try and silently throttle any high-bandwidth traffic they think they can get away with. Steam IPs are often a target of this, as game downloads can gobble up a lot of bandwidth.

OP, your downloads are probably slow because your ISP signed more people up than they can actually support. They slow your downloads down so grandma's Netflix streaming down the road doesn't buffer.
Not to mention that a lot of people think that bandwith grow on trees or something. Many ISPs have dynamic systems put in place for when a particular account/person use too much then they slowly throttle their access to it. Because they're not the only one(s) using said service, you know...

My speeds are considerably slower on wi-fi than when using a cable, despite having a gigabit+ wi-fi connection.

same, dunno the issue at all, not a tech whiz by any means but I am also using an ethernet cable with it and it still dips super low.
disk usage is also consistently 100+ mbps which is a higher avg than my network usage. would that hint more to network than hardware? the router on top of being connected via ethernet is also at most 10 ft away.
Steam need to download the files first, which explain why your disk is used at that time as it is writing the received data. It will also sometimes start "installing" right away. This has more to do with how the devs of a certain game decided to handle files and stuff for their own game. Sometimes some game devs decide that you need to unpack their whole game, apply the change (which sometimes might seem meaningless in term of weight versus what is already installed) then have the package be assembled again once the modifications are complete (think .zip but with a different format for the game). Other games simply require you to download a specific file and overwrite what you already have (which is several order of magnitude faster...)

Anyhow, once Steam got the files it will do the actual install, which again use your drive. Steam download manager do a splendid job of showing you what's actually happening at what time. Most installers/downloaders just give you a simple progression bar and don't give you any kind of information. You should be able to know exactly what's going on and if the download is finished and has moved to the installation phase or whatever.

Also, just as an aside... Even discussing about how Wi-Fi is "reliable" is comedy gold. Wi-Fi is never reliable and always prone to disruptions for whatever reason. The only really secure connection is always wired...

thank you much for the knowledge. however not exactly saying it isn't wifi and that wifi is solid. Rather that I'm less suspecting of it since personally I'm in better conditions than I use to be and with better wifi yet its just as slow if not worse.just genuinely at a loss and really hoping its 100% not hardware. also I just get very suspect of steam bc of hearing on various past issues.
yes a bit salty of slow speed, but really jus curious to see what light could be shed in hopes it may help my situation..especially without hopefully needing another bil...
