it has only been a license that you purchased for any software for pc's / consoles etc since the 1960's You have never owned anything. so nothing has changed and it has been that way since way before steam. You used to have physical copies on tape / disc etc.. but you still didn't own what was on them. If steam goes down or sold, they would be back online with new ownership in less then 72 hours.
1960s??? Which parallel universe did you travel here from?? LMAO!!!! More like 2012.
And you were wrong
Not really, software licensing started in the 1950's and it hasn't changed. The only thing that changed is how easy it is to enforce them now.
There's printed software licenses in the back of my manuals for Marathon Infinity (1996) and Diablo II (2000), among others. Software licenses predate the internet, they're not just about digital distribution.
(digital distribution, authentication servers, and the internet just made them easier to enforce.)
The end of gaming was bound to happen. Nothing lasts forever.
And with all due respect to the gamers out there a good percentage of them are part of the reason we are where we are right now.
Just because we have a political party in the U.S. that isn't teaching what proper accountability is doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
"Hey, the law says scamming people is okay, so why are you complaining?"
and
"Just be comfortable with the fact that nothing really belongs to you."
Even though I paid these people a good ten thousand euros...
I mean, before the rise of digital games, the games really belonged to us, we could even resell them secondhand, just imagine...
EDIT : I am in France, and the rules of the USA are not supposed to apply here, normally in my country. But these platforms, like YouTube too, enforce rules from other countries in places like mine where they shouldn’t apply.
Exactely.
but i'm adding :
"when Steam finally shuts down, we’re all going to get screwed deep"
When I spend so much money, I don't expect to lose everything at any moment just because a few super-rich guys decide to do so, simply because by shutting down Steam they can afford to buy another swimming pool at the bottom of their garden in Versailles style.
EDIT : And I also have a lot of empathy for the guys who have spent thousands of dollars on content in a 'game as a service' (like GTA 5, War Thunder, Star Citizen (!!!)) and who will lose absolutely everything in a few years (or maybe less, given the way things are going).
To me, that’s the definition of theft. Of course, I support 'Stop Killing Game'.
OP is throwing in other unrelated stuff themselves, so...
