Dev Says Will Ban For Using Steam
edit: Thank you for the feedback everyone. I didn't know about such tools, so when I read this, it was very confusing and bizarre and I thought surely this can't be right!

Original post:

This feels like a fever dream but this developer just posted to Steam saying that you if you use Steam to launch your game that they'll ban your game account. Yes, the game is obtainable and downloadable on Steam. Surely this can not be okay with Valve?

Source: Look at the image that they posted here:

edit: updated to more specific link above but here is the link to the discussion thread of their news post: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/app/2139460/eventcomments/592904149587362720

They say "Steam account launchers", so I don't think they mean Steam itself. Probably refer to some 3rd party launchers?

That is not what it says.

They're cracking down on multiple account usage to bot/farm rewards, meaning they're going to crack down on accounts signed in from third party launchers that allow multiboxing.

Nothing to do with Steam itself.

I hope so. I didn't know that such tools exist but for once I'd be glad to have misunderstood something, because this is just so bizarre.

It's directed at shell programs that allow users to launch multiple instances of a game on a single Steam account/computer. Not Steam itself. Basically it's aimed at people who're botting rewards and using multiple accounts/characters at once to give themselves unfair advantages.

Yup, very different from banning for using steam. Very normal thing for games to crack down on. Op has nothing to worry about if they're not doing that stuff.

Thank you and the others, I appreciate the information. This makes so much more sense. I didn't know that these tools exist but I'm also not surprised.

Multiboxing isn't uncommon, it's seen mostly in MMOs like WoW, FF14, and Runescape.

But with things such as events for rare deviants (which can be given/dropped to players), and the special blueprints, it wouldn't be surprising people would abuse such a feature.

I was gonna say EVE online

I never played much EVE, though with how massive the player driven commerce is, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.
