Why would anyone ever buy another online-only game from EA or Ubisoft?
These companies go ahead and take people's money for these games right up until the point they announce imminent server shutdown.

Legal implications aside, as a consumer why would you want to shrug it off and keep supporting such established business practices? You know they're going to keep on doing it.

If your answer is "they cannot keep the servers up forever," then they should make a good-faith effort to allow private server accessibility or single-player capability, or else should announce closure something like five years ahead of time, rather than this deliberate ambiguity up until the last few months or half-year.

Edit: @ datCookie with the superfluous preaching below: "it's not our place" to tell others what topical questions they can ask on an open forum. If I want to make an argument about something, or question something that's goofy, I'll damn well post it if I want. Just as people are free to blow their money how they want, and encourage bad-faith businesses.

Because people want to spend their money how they wish and not be told how to spend it by others.

Yeah, those companies are crap and they produce crap. I haven't bought any of their games in years. People are very slowly catching on that they're not worth it. But it's not our place to just tell people not to buy their products. Let them figure it out on their own.

you forgot to mention every other publisher on this Planet (including valve) in your ecamples, as everyone will shutdown servers after x time.

Many people are just too dumb to understand that......

That's nice, except I never told you that you shouldn't make this thread. I answered the question you posed about why people would buy these games.

Instead of telling them not to best to frame the problem in a way that makes them “figure it out on their own” faster.

Although most people aren’t very good at persuading others, at least not in the way they intend.

That's exactly why I waited for Conan Exiles to be discounted to 3.99

I had a blast playing for a couple of months and what happens further, I don't care.

As Robert De Niro said in "Ronin": Good things come to those wo wait.

For the most part, yeah. Bad reviews will yield good results in this regard, but also showing good alternatives is another. If people found another CoD type game that was cheaper and better quality, I've no doubt that a lot more people would move away from the expensive and low quality ones.

That's the natural life cycle of all multiplayer games. The servers will at some point be shut down. Some games might have community servers or peer to peer hosting, but for the most part, they're gone once the servers close.

It's not just EA and Ubisoft, it's all of them. Most MMOs of the past are gone too for example.
The largest part of the gaming population don't care about games dying. They buy a game, play them and move unto something else. By the time the game closes servers they've already forgotten about it.
I will never buy an Ubisoft or EA game again. I stopped playing their games 3 years ago because of their questionable decisions, and over the years they have only gotten worse.
The better question is.. why do idjits buy server based games and act surprised when they inevitably shut down?

Seriously if you're worried about that sorta studff DON'T BUY ALWAYS ONLINE GAMES.
Online only games are a scam. You spend money on them, and 1 year later they get shut-down without any refunds.
People on a whole have short memories, are forgiving and only tend to remember good things that happen to them.
